CONE TUNISIAN SQUARE

Hi everyone!

Have you heard of Tunisian Crochet Blanket CAL 2021? If not, let me tell you something about it. This CAL is organized and hosted by the talented Arunima of Knitter Knotter. It consists of 24 FREE Tunisian Square Patterns from different amazing designers. This squares will be seamed together to make a beautiful blanket.

I have been working on my square contribution for a while now and I am so delighted to finally share it with you. This square is crocheted mainly with Tunisian Knit Stitch with the addition of what I called “cone” Tunisian stitch. I am really not sure if there is such a stitch so let us just call it Cone Stitch.

The inspiration for this stitch was taken from the cone crochet stitch. I have first seen it on YouTube and I thought it is a great stitch to incorporate to my Tunisian square. So without anymore delay, let us dive in to our pattern.

CONE TUNISIAN SQUARE PATTERN

SKILL LEVEL

Intermediate

MATERIALS

Worsted Weight (#4) Yarn, (I used Knit Picks Wool of Andes, approx. 155 yards)

Tunisian Crochet Hook Size 8 mm (or size to obtain gauge)

Scissors

Tape Measure

Tapestry Needle

GAUGE

8 sts x 6 rows of tks = 2 inches

FINISHED MEASUREMENT

12 x 12 inches (blocked)

STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS

ch – chain

st(s) – stitch(es)

sl st – slip stitch

tks – tunisian knit stitch

FwP – forward pass

RetP – return pass

Rep – repeat

sc – single crochet

SPECIAL STITCH

Cone Stitch (cs) – insert hook into next stitch as for Tunisian knit stitch, pull up a loop, insert hook and pull up a loop (to the height of the current row) into each stitch of the current (which is the number 1 row in the photo below) and the 4 previous rows below, yarn over and pull through 5 loops on the hook.

NOTES

1. Read the pattern carefully before starting.
2. All RetP are worked as ch 1, (yo, pull through the next 2 loops) until only one loop remains on the hook.
3. The loop on the hook is considered as the first stitch.
4. This pattern is multiple of 8 + 7.
5. Asterisk * indicates pattern repeats. You will need to repeat all the instructions between asterisks.

PATTERN

Ch 47.

Row 1: Pull up a loop in the back bump of the 2nd ch from hook and each remaining ch, RetP.

Row 2 – 5: Tks across, RetP.

Row 6: Tks in the next 2 sts, *cs in the next st, tks in the next 7 sts*; Rep * until 4 sts remain, cs in the next st, tks in the last 3 sts, RetP.

Row 7 – 12: Tks across, RetP.

Row 13: Tks in the next 6 sts, *cs in the next st, tks in the next 7 sts*; Rep * across, RetP.

Row 14 – 19: Tks across, RetP.

Row 20: Rep Row 6.

Row 21 – 26: Tks across, RetP.

Row 27: Rep Row 13.

Row 28 – 33: Tks across, RetP.

Row 34: Rep Row 6.

Row 35: Tks across, RetP.

Row 36: Sl st bind off. Do not fasten off. Continue with the finishing part of the pattern.

Finishing:

Add a single crochet border, making sure to put 3 sc in each corner of your square. Fasten off and weave in all ends. Block square using your preferred method.
