Chimera Hat

Hi friends! I haven’t shared anything in a hot minute, but I’m back with a new pattern.

The Chimera Hat pattern was developed in response to a challenge posted by Lauren from Valkyrie Fibers Tahoe. Using her self-striping fingering weight yarn, she issued a challenge to crochet designers on her Instagram page to create a hat. Our mutual friend Shobha from Serendipitous Wool tagged me, and the rest is history.

My creativity is being tested because I have never designed or crocheted a hat using fingering weight yarn. Fortunately, I have some design concepts in mind to support my claims. I had repeatedly torn my projects, but that’s a necessary part of the design process. I’m quite pleased with how this project turned out!

I usually struggle to name my patterns, so I either seek assistance from others or attempt to name them on my own. I asked Lauren for this pattern. It is only fitting to ask for her advice as she is the one who created the yarn colorway (The Grand Admiral) I used. She recommended Chimera as a name. She claimed that The Chimera, a lesser-known character from Star Wars, served as the inspiration for the yarn. I was convinced her suggestion was ideal. So, there you go – THE CHIMERA HAT!

  • Optional: Stitch Marker, Pompom

FINISHED MEASUREMENT: Approximately10” (height) x 18” (circumference – unstretched)

STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS | US Terminology

NOTES

  1. Read the pattern carefully before starting.
  2. This pattern is worked from the bottom up, in the rounds.
  3. Ch 2 does not count as a stitch; Ch 3 counts as 1 Double Crochet.
  4. I recommend using a stitch marker to mark the 1st stitch of each round. Remember to move stitch markers as you progress.
  5. * * repeat instructions between asterisks as many times as directed or repeat at specified locations.
  6. Please measure for a more precise fit as not all heads fit into age-based sizes. You should add or subtract 6 stitches from the foundation chains/stitches in order to change the size of your hat. Add or remove a pattern repeat (Rounds 1 – 4) before shaping the crown pattern to achieve a more fitted or slouchy look. Keep in mind that this pattern is a multiple of 6 stitches. And, although this pattern calls for yarn with fingering weights, you can use any kind of yarn weights you prefer.
